Prices of vegetables, garlic go up

The prices of vegetables, onion and garlic went up while the prices of rice, atta, edible oil and sugar remained high on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday.

Traders said that the prices of vegetables witnessed a sharp rise on the city’s kitchen markets over the week as rain damaged production of winter vegetables in many parts in the country.

 

They said that the cost of transport also increased recently due to blockades and strikes and the additional cost was fueling the prices of essential commodities.

Traders also said that the prices of garlic and imported onion increased on the city markets due to supply shortage.

The prices of vegetables increased by Tk 10-20 a kilogram on the city markets over the week.

Aubergine sold for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 30–40 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 80-90 a kilogram, cauliflower for Tk 40-50 apiece, cabbage for Tk 40-50 apiece, cucumber for Tk 40–50 a kilogram, beans for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, carrot for Tk 70–80 a kilogram and tomatoes for Tk 70–80 a kilogram on Friday.

Green chillies sold for Tk 80-100 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The prices of potatoes increased by Tk 5-10 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 60-70 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of local variety of onions decreased slightly but that of the imported item increased by Tk 10 a kilogram over the week.

The local variety of onions sold for Tk 100-120 a kilogram while the imported item sold for Tk 130-150 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of garlic increased by Tk 10-20 a kilogram on the kitchen markets in Dhaka and its local variety retailed at Tk 240–280 a kilogram while the imported garlic sold for Tk 210–240 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of rice remained high over the week.

The coarse and medium-quality varieties of rice sold for Tk 52–56 a kilogram on Friday.

BR-28 variety, also known as a lower-grade Miniket, retailed at Tk 62–66 a kilogram.

The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 72–75 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 70–80 a kilogram on Friday.

The price of atta remained high and the unpackaged item sold for Tk 50 a kilogram while the packaged item sold for Tk 60-65 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of packaged refined atta increased by Tk 5 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 70-75 a kilogram in the city.

The price of edible oil also remained high and unpackaged soya bean oil sold for Tk 160 a litre while packaged item sold for Tk 170-175 a litre on the day.

A five-litre bottle of soya bean oil sold for Tk 810-850.

The price of palm oil also remained high and the item sold for Tk 130-140 a litre in the city on Friday.

The price of broiler chicken remained unchanged and the item sold for Tk 190–200 a kilogram on Friday.

Locally bred hens sold for Tk 550–600 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 300–310 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of eggs remained high and the item sold for Tk 44-45 a hali (four pieces) in the city.

The prices of ginger remained high and the imported ginger sold for Tk 200-250 a kilogram while the local variety sold for Tk 260-300 a kilogram.

The price of sugar also remained high over the week and the unpackaged item sold for Tk 150-155 a kilogram while the packaged item for Tk 165-170 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of beef remained unchanged and the item sold for Tk 650-700 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of fish also remained high over the week in the city.

Rohita sold for Tk 300–400 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 300–440 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.

Pangas sold for Tk 180–200 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 160–200 a kilogram on Friday.

The coarse variety of red lentil sold for Tk 110 a kilogram and the medium-quality variety for Tk 125–130 a kilogram on Friday.

The price of fine variety of red lentil remained high and the item sold for Tk 135–140 a kilogram on Friday.

The price of mutton remained high and the item sold for Tk 1,000–1,200 a kilogram on the day.

The price of salt also remained high and the item sold for Tk 42 a kilogram in the city.
